COMMUNIQUE ISSUED BY THE 6TH INTERNATIONAL INTERDISCIPLINARY CONFERENCE on RAISING GIRLS’ AMBITION (RAGA 2020)

DATE: OCTOBER 13-16, 2020 PHYSICAL VENUE: THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTRE, LEAD CITY UNIVERSITY, IBADAN, NIGERIA. ONLINE VENUE: ZOOM THEME: ADVANCING WOMEN’S CAREER FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT DATE: November 3, 2020 INTRODUCTION The conference was organized by the Global Youth Leadership and Girl-child Foundation in partnership with Lead City University, Ibadan, Nigeria. The RAGA 2020 edition witnessed 2 keynote speakers: Professor Olapeju Aiyelaagbe and Rachel Chanel Clarke, 8 lead speakers: Professor Paul Bueno Mesquita, Dr. Loretta Cheeks, Maria van Staden, Princess Abiodun Oyefusi, Olugbenga Oti, Neo T. Tlhaselo, Dr. Geetanjali Gera, Jamila Suleiman, Esq. and participants cut across four continents and over 10 countries. Also in attendance was the director, SERVICOM, NYSC gender unit, Mrs Sandra Kolade. About 50 papers were presented; participation was both physical and virtual. The conference witnessed a detour in the introduction of the Women Business Ownership Program by the Rachel Chanel Clarke Globalization Program, USA, (a new partner) who gave opportunity to a winning proposal of a young Nigerian female business owner with a business funding of up to $10,000. Secondary school students engaged in various competitions: debate, quiz, essay and creative arts. SUMMARY OF DECISIONS: 1. It was decided that there should be a deliberate government and NGO’s investments in sensitization and awareness creation of parents and the civil society on making science subjects attractive to girls and the elimination of gender bias and discrimination in schools. 2. That there should be strong government support for women researchers (at Federal and State levels) and the provision of adequate funding to enhance the critical mass of the female gender in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). 3. Women and girls need to be equipped with knowledge and skills in STEAM to position them to contribute significantly to national development. There's a need for government institutions to give gender disaggregated data on the beneficiaries empowerment program. 4. Women and girls need mentors to overcome career de-motivation, stagnation, attrition, frustration and wrong choice of vocation and profession among women. Therefore, Government should mainstream institutional mentorship in secondary and tertiary curriculum. 5. Education is the single most powerful way to lift people out of poverty, yet many women are still left behind in education attainment globally, the Government needs to enforce compulsory Basic Education across the country (especially in Oyo State): parents who marry off underage girls and men who marry them have to be prosecuted. The Government should reintegrate girls who have dropped out of school for a second chance. 6. It is observed that the language of the legal profession is predominantly masculine, ‘’my lord and he” for both male and female judges; this needs to change. The law school needs to ensure a change towards an inclusive legal profession by inculcating a gender neutral language. 7. There are fewer women in politics and legislative positions of political power especially in Nigeria. Women work harder than men to represent their constituencies and play an important role in counteracting corruption. The Government should implement the 35% representation of women in the 2023 and subsequent elections. 8. Women in male dominated workplaces (e.g. Female Pilots) face extreme difficulties such as body shaming, gender based discrimination and sexual harassment; therefore, Government and private organizations need to formulate and adopt policies, strategies, and initiatives aimed at recruiting, integrating, maintaining, promoting and empowering women in traditionally male-dominated occupations for their survival in these workplaces. 9. Entrepreneurship is considered the driving force of economic development and sustainability, yet there is a dearth of women in high echelon business ownership. Government should give more quota to female youths and women in their entrepreneurship policy. 10. Advancing women’s career in vocational and technical education will enhance women to be part of driving economic growth and social development; Government should ensure increased intake of girls in technical Universities and Polytechnics. 11. The Government should also ensure that culprits of rape and violence against women and girls are given adequate punitive measures under the law; restore the dignity of the victim. 12. The Government should make adequate medicare available to women in their reproductive years and gazette six months paid maternity leave into law (newly active in Oyo State); to be adopted nationally both in government and private sector.
